Tungstic acid is a polymer compound with various forms, which is composed of tungsten trioxide WO3 combined with water in different ratios and in different forms. Known tungstic acids include yellow tungstic acid, white tungstic acid, and metatungstic acid. It starts dehydration at 100°C, and its boiling point is 1473°C. Burning at high temperature transforms into tungsten trioxide. Insoluble in cold water and most acids, slightly soluble in hot water, soluble in alkali, hydrofluoric acid and ammonia. Orthotungstic acid or paratungstic acid solution can be treated with dilute acid to obtain colloidal tungstic acid, which contains different amounts of water, and its solubility and activity in water are greater than that of yellow tungstic acid. Powdery white tungstic acid is more active than yellow tungstic acid. It can be prepared by adding dilute nitric acid solution to tungstate solution. Yellow tungstic acid is used to make metal tungsten powder, and powdery white tungstic acid can be used to prepare metatungstate and tungsten-containing heteropolysalt.
