What Are Chemical Properties of Tungsten Dioxide?

The heat of formation is 134 kcal/mol, and it is volatile at 1050°C; it is insoluble in water, alkaline solution, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid. But soluble in H2SO4, generating red salt. It is easily oxidized by nitric acid into high-valent tungsten oxide; it is easily disproportionated in inert gas to produce metal tungsten and tungsten trioxide. It melts and decomposes when heated to 1500~1600°C in N2 air flow. It can be reduced to metal tungsten by H2 at high temperature. Stable in 45%~60% water vapor at 900°C; stable in 40%~55% hydrogen. Tungsten trioxide is produced by reducing tungsten trioxide with hydrogen at 575-600°C, or produced by the reaction of metal tungsten and tungsten trioxide; Turn into blue oxide; tungsten dioxide can be reduced to metal tungsten by carbon at 1020°C; at 250~300°C, reduce tungsten trioxide with hydrogen or carbon monoxide, and heat tungsten trioxide to 200~250°C in air °C, powdery purple tungsten oxide (WO2₂.₇₂) can be obtained.
