What Is Tungstenyl Chloride?

Tungsten chloride is also known as Tungsten Oxytetrachloride, WOCl4=341.66. Tungstenyl chloride is dark red needle-like crystal. It can be violently hydrolyzed by water and decomposes immediately in moist air. The relative density of tungstenyl chloride is 11.92, the melting point is 211°C, and the boiling point of tungstenyl chloride is 227.5°C. Tungsten chloride is soluble in benzene, disulfide dichloride and carbon disulfide, but insoluble in ethanol. Tungstenyl chloride decomposes in water, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid to form a yellow-green precipitate, and reacts with ammonia water or sodium hydroxide solution to form tungstate solution. Tungstenyl chloride is prepared by reacting tungsten trioxide and tungsten hexachloride (1:2 molar ratio) at 175-200°C. Tungsten chloride can be used in the manufacture of incandescent lamps and other purposes.
