There are two known types of tungsten oxychloride.
(1) Tungsten oxychloride: chemical formula WO2Cl2, molecular weight 286.77, golden yellow shiny scaly crystals, melting point 266°C. Stable in humid air, soluble in cold water and slowly hydrolyzed, rapidly hydrolyzed when heated, dissolved in alkaline solution and decomposed simultaneously.
(2) Tungsten oxychloride: chemical formula WOCl4, molecular weight 341.69, relative density 11.92. Purple-red columnar crystal or orange needle-like crystal, melting point 210.4°C, boiling point 227.5°C, soluble in CS2, decomposed in water. Preparation method: heat metal tungsten powder and pass in moist Cl2 gas, or heat the mixture of WO3 and carbon powder and pass in Cl2 gas to obtain a mixture of WO2Cl2 and WOCl4, and then use the property of WOCl4 to be easily sublimated to separate them.
