The low-valent tungsten compound produced by the reduction of tungsten hexachloride or tungsten oxychloride by zinc can react with methylene chloride or carbon tetrachloride to form a tungsten carbene complex, which can undergo carbonyl olefination with aldehydes reaction to obtain derivatives of alkenes.
