Tungsten Hexachloride Reduction

Trimethylaluminum can methylate tungsten hexachloride to form hexamethyltungsten:

WCl6 +3 Al2(CH3)6 → W(CH3)6 + 3 Al2(CH3)4Cl2

Treatment with butyllithium yields reagents that can be used for the deoxygenation of epoxides.

The chlorine atom of WCl6 can be replaced by many ligands, including Br−, NCS− and RO− (R = alkyl, aryl).

Reduction of WCl6 can form tungsten pentachloride and tungsten tetrachloride.
