What Are Physical And Chemical Properties of Tungsten Tetrachloride?

Tungsten tetrachloride is a dark brown solid, its hygroscopicity is not as strong as that of tungsten pentachloride, but it will be hydrolyzed when it meets water. It does not melt or sublimate even when heated, but it decomposes when it reaches the melting point if heated under vacuum.

Tungsten tetrachloride is a black solid that hydrolyzes. At 450°C, tungsten tetrachloride disproportionates into tungsten dichloride and tungsten pentachloride. It has an orthorhombic crystal system, similar to niobium tetrachloride, with lattice constants a = 807 pm, b = 889 pm, c = 685 pm. It is sensitive to air and moisture, but can be stored indefinitely in a nitrogen atmosphere. Tungsten tetrachloride is insoluble in organic solvents.
