Tungsten pentachloride can be produced by reducing tungsten hexachloride with hydrogen at 350–400°C. The reduction of tungsten hexachloride by tetrachlorethylene at 100°C under light can also produce tungsten pentachloride:
2WCl6+H2 ⟶ 2WCl5+2HCl
2WCl6+C2Cl4 ⟶2WCl5+C2Cl6
