What Are Physical And Chemical Properties of Tungsten Dichloride?

Very unstable in the air, easily oxidized. It will decompose at 500°C, even be oxidized by water, and react with water to release hydrogen. Soluble in hydrochloric acid, ethanol and ether.

Tungsten dichloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula WCl2. It does not contain simple divalent tungsten ions, but a polymeric cluster compound. This material was dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid to form (H3O)2[W6Cl14](H2O)x. The anion W6Cl142- in this compound is consistent with the solid tungsten dichloride, which is a regular octahedral atomic cluster formed by six tungsten. Heating this complex acid turns back into tungsten dichloride. The structure is similar to the same family of molybdenum dichloride.
