What is Tungsten Trichloride?

Tungsten Trichloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula W6Cl18. It is an octahedral cluster compound, a brown solid, which can be obtained by the chlorination of tungsten dichloride. This cluster has 12 dichloro-bridged ligands, and its structure is similar to niobium or tantalum chloride. In contrast, W6Cl12 has only 8 trichloro bridges. Tungsten hexachloride is reduced by bismuth to obtain chlorides of mixed valence W(III)-W(IV): 9WCl6+ 8Bi→3W3Cl10+8BiCl3
