Tungsten oxide can be obtained by calcining APT or tungstic acid
Calcined in air (oxidizing atmosphere) to get tungsten trioxide
Calcined in a weak reducing atmosphere to get industrial blue tungsten oxide – a mixture of a large amount of WO2.9, a small amount of WO2.72 and a small amount of WO3 and WO2.
Tungsten trioxide can be prepared by drying and calcining tungstic acid and ammonium paratungstate.
Drying: at about 100°C, remove the physically adsorbed water in the material.
Calcination: removal of combined water and ammonia.
Tungstic acid is calcined in air to produce tungsten trioxide:
H2WO4=WO3+H2O
Ammonium paratungstate is calcined in air and converted to tungsten trioxide: 5(NH4)2O•12WO3•nH2O=12WO3+10NH3↑+(n+5)H2O↑
