What Is Tungsten Trisulfide?

Tungsten Trisulfide (Tungsten Trisulfide) chemical formula WS3, molecular weight 280.04. Reddish brown/tan powder. Unstable and easy to decompose. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in hot water and alkaline solution, easy to gel, soluble in alkali metal sulfide, ammonium sulfide, ammonium polysulfide, alkali or alkali metal carbonate. Heating in isolation from air, decomposes into tungsten disulfide and sulfur. Heating in air or oxygen produces tungsten trioxide and sulfur dioxide. Under heating conditions, it reacts with chlorine to form tungsten hexachloride.

Tungsten trisulfide production method

It is obtained by the direct reaction of a mixture of metal tungsten and elemental sulfur in a vacuum-fused quartz tube at high temperature, or by the direct reaction of tungsten disulfide and excess sulfur. Trisulfide can also be produced by passing hydrogen sulfide in sodium tungstate solution to generate sodium thiotungstate, and then acidifying it.
