Ammonium metatungstate is a white crystalline powder with a specific gravity of 4 and is easily soluble in water. It decomposes into a relatively stable compound (NH4)6H2W12O40 after heating at 200-300°C; it decomposes into tungsten trioxide after heating above 300°C. It is obtained by the interaction between ammonium paratungstate and tungstic acid and crystallization by low temperature concentration. Ammonium metatungstate is mostly used in the petrochemical industry to produce tungsten compounds, metal tungsten and alloy products.
