Metatungstic acid (Metatungstic Acid) has the chemical formula H6[H2W12O40]•XH2O, and is a transparent octahedral crystal with a specific gravity of 3.93. Metatungstic acid is soluble in water, ether and ethanol. The aqueous solution is strongly acidic, and no precipitation occurs when adding acid. It can be treated with ether extraction to obtain the adduct of ether and metatungstic acid for separation and purification. Metatungstic acid decomposes at 50°C and weathers in air. The structure is similar to heteropoly acids such as tungstophosphoric acid, but its central element is two hydrogen atoms. Because it is polymerized from the same tungstic acid, it can also be regarded as isopoly acid. It is prepared by the action of ammonium metatungstate solution and platinum chloric acid. Used to prepare other tungsten-containing heteropolyacids, precipitate alkaloids and organic bases.
