Difference Between The Physical and Chemical Properties of Tetrabromotungsten and Tungsten Dibromide

There are some differences in physical and chemical properties between tetrabromotungsten (WBr4) and dibromotungsten (WBr2). The following are their main differences:

Phase: Tungsten tetrabromide and tungsten dibromide are both solid at room temperature.

Melting point: The melting point of tetrabromotungsten is higher, about 220-230°C, while the melting point of tungsten dibromide is lower, about 150-160°C.

Density: The density of tetrabromotungsten is higher, about 7.6-7.7 g/cm³, while the density of tungsten dibromide is lower, about 6.3-6.5 g/cm³.

Color: tetrabromotungsten is usually dark brown or reddish brown, while tungsten dibromide is grayish black.

Solubility: Tetrabromotungsten has some solubility in some organic solvents, while tungsten dibromide is relatively insoluble in common solvents.

Crystal structure: The crystal structure of tetrabromotungsten is orthorhombic, while the crystal structure of tungsten dibromide is hexagonal.

Chemical Properties: Due to their different chemical coordination numbers, tetrabromotungsten and tungsten dibromide show different properties and reaction pathways in chemical reactions.
