Difference in Production Methods between Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Tribromide

There are some differences in the production methods of tetrabromotungsten (WBr4) and tribromotungsten (WBr3). The following is a brief description of their production methods:

Production method of tungsten tetrabromide:

Direct Synthesis: Tungsten tetrabromide is produced by reacting tungsten with bromine. This is usually done in an inert atmosphere to avoid interference from oxygen and moisture. The reaction can be carried out at elevated temperatures, usually using tungsten powder reacted with an excess of bromine gas to produce tetrabromotungsten.

Methods of production of tungsten tribromide:
Direct synthesis method: tungsten tribromide is produced by reacting tungsten with bromine. This method usually uses tungsten powder reacted with an appropriate amount of bromine gas to produce tungsten tribromide. The reaction can be carried out at elevated temperatures and is usually carried out in an inert atmosphere to prevent interference from oxygen and moisture.
Reduction: Tungsten tetrabromide is reduced to tungsten tribromide by using a reducing agent under suitable conditions. The reducing agent can be some substance with strong reducing properties such as hydrogen or metallic aluminium. During the reduction process, one of the bromine atoms in tetrabromotungsten is reduced to tungsten to produce tungsten tribromide.
