Difference in Chemical Properties between Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Tribromide

Tungsten tetrabromide (WBr4) and tungsten tribromide (WBr3) are two different compounds, and there are obvious differences in their chemical properties.

Oxidation state difference:
In tetrabromotungsten, the oxidation state of the element tungsten is +4, while in tribromotungsten, the oxidation state of the element tungsten is +3. This means that tungsten carries a different charge when it forms a chemical bond with the bromine atoms in the two compounds, which affects their reactivity and chemical behavior.

Chemical reactivity differences:
Due to differences in oxidation states, tetra- and tribromotungsten bromide exhibit different properties in chemical reactions. Tungsten tetrabromide acts as an oxidizing agent in some reactions and participates in oxidation reactions. On the other hand, tungsten tribromide can act as a reducing agent in some reactions and participate in reduction reactions.

Differences in redox properties:
Due to the difference in oxidation state, tetra- and tribromotungsten bromide show different properties in redox reactions with other substances. Due to the higher oxidation state of tetrabromotungsten tetrabromide, it is more easily reduced and participates in oxidation reactions. While tungsten tribromide has a lower oxidation state, it can be used as a reducing agent in some reactions and participate in reduction reactions.
