What is the difference between tetrabromotungsten and tribromotungsten?

Tungsten tetrabromide (Br4W) and tertiary tungsten bromide (Br3W) are both bromides, but there are some differences in their structure and properties.

First, structurally, tetrabromotungsten is a black solid with a tetrahedral structure. In it, the tungsten atom is located in the center of the tetrahedron and is connected to four bromine atoms. On the other hand, tungsten tribromide is a brown solid with an octahedral structure. In this, the tungsten atom is located in the center of the octahedron and is connected to six bromine atoms.

Secondly, tungsten tetrabromide is also different from tungsten tribromide in terms of chemical properties. Tungsten tetrabromide is a strong oxidizer with high stability and can react at high temperature. On the other hand, tungsten tribromide has relatively weak oxidizing property and lower stability, and it is easy to be oxidized and decomposed by the influence of oxygen and water vapor in the air.

Finally, in terms of application, tetrabromotungsten and tribromotungsten are widely used in chemical industry, electronic industry, ceramic industry and other fields. Among them, tetrabromotungsten is commonly used in the synthesis of polymer materials, preparation of catalysts, preparation of electrodes and other applications; while tertiary tungsten bromide is mainly used in the preparation of other bromides, synthesis of organic compounds and other fields.
