What Is The Difference between Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Hexabromide?

Tungsten tetrabromide (WBr4) and tungsten hexabromide (WBr6) have some differences in chemical structure and properties.

Chemical structure: Tungsten tetrabromide is a compound composed of one tungsten atom and four bromine atoms, while tungsten hexabromide is composed of one tungsten atom and six bromine atoms.

Bromide state: The tungsten atom in tungsten tetrabromide is in +4 oxidation state, while the tungsten atom in tungsten hexabromide is in +6 oxidation state. This means that in tungsten hexabromide, the tungsten atoms have lost more electrons.

Thermal stability: Tungsten hexabromide is more thermally stable than tungsten tetrabromide. Tungsten hexabromide is relatively stable at higher temperatures, while tungsten tetrabromide is easy to decompose at higher temperatures.

Solubility: In common solvents, both tungsten tetrabromide and tungsten hexabromide can be dissolved, but the solubility of tungsten hexabromide is better. Tungsten hexabromide can form stable tungsten bromide complexes in organic solvents, while tungsten tetrabromide has low solubility.

Application: Due to the high thermal stability and good solubility of tungsten hexabromide, it has certain applications in some chemical reactions, especially as a catalyst or a reaction starter. The application of tungsten tetrabromide is relatively rare, mainly used in specific organic synthesis reactions or as raw materials for chemical reagents.
