Application

The main use of sodium tungstate is as an intermediate for extracting tungsten from its ores, and almost all ores are tungstates. Otherwise, sodium tungstate has only niche applications.

In organic chemistry, sodium tungstate is used as a catalyst for the epoxidation of olefins and the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. It exhibits antidiabetic effects.

Sodium polytungstate solutions are used for density separations because this mixture is less toxic than bromoform and methylene iodide, yet its density is still between that of many naturally coupled minerals.
