Differences in Chemical Properties between Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Pentabromide

There are some chemical differences between tungsten tetrabromide (WBr4) and tungsten pentabromide (WBr5).

Oxidation: Tungsten pentabromide is more oxidizing than tungsten tetrabromide, it can react with many oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide and produce oxides.

Hydrolysis: When tungsten pentabromide is in contact with water, it will be hydrolyzed rapidly to produce tungsten hydroxide and hydrogen bromide.

Reactivity: Compared with tungsten tetrabromide, tungsten pentabromide is more reactive, and it can participate in many chemical reactions, such as substitution reactions with organic substances, and formation of complexes with metals.

Oxidation-reduction properties: Due to the difference in the number of bromine atoms, tungsten pentabromide is more prone to redox reactions than tungsten tetrabromide, and can participate in more electron transfer processes.
