The Difference between The Production Methods of Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Tetraiodide

Tungsten tetrabromide (WBr4) and tungsten tetraiodide (WI4) are compounds of tungsten with bromine and iodine, and have some different characteristics in terms of production methods.

The production method of tungsten tetrabromide:

The production of tungsten tetrabromide usually involves reacting metal tungsten with hydrogen bromide. This process can be done through the following steps:

Preparation of metal tungsten: Metal tungsten is used as a starting material, and usually needs to be crushed into smaller particles for better reaction.

Generation of hydrobromic acid: Hydrogen and bromine can react to form hydrogen bromide gas. This can be achieved by mixing hydrogen and bromine in a reactor.

Reaction with metal tungsten: Metal tungsten particles are introduced into the reactor and allowed to react with the generated hydrogen bromide gas. This reaction causes metallic tungsten to chemically react with bromine gas to form tungsten tetrabromide.

Extraction and purification: After the reaction, tungsten tetrabromide can be extracted and purified by appropriate methods to remove impurities and unreacted raw materials.

The production method of tungsten tetraiodide:

Tungsten tetraiodide is produced in a similar way to tungsten tetrabromide, but hydrogen iodide is used instead of hydrogen bromide. The following are the usual production steps:

Prepare metal tungsten: Metal tungsten needs to be prepared as a starting material.

Formation of hydrogen iodide: Hydrogen and iodine can react to produce hydrogen iodide gas. This can be achieved by mixing hydrogen and iodine in a reactor.

Reaction with metal tungsten: Metal tungsten particles are introduced into the reactor and allowed to react with the generated hydrogen iodide gas. This initiates a chemical reaction between the metal tungsten and iodine gas, forming tungsten tetraiodide.

Extraction and purification: After the reaction is completed, tungsten tetraiodide needs to be extracted and purified to remove impurities and unreacted raw materials.
