What Are the Applications of Tungsten Wire in Arc Welding?

In arc welding, tungsten wire is usually used as an electrode material, mainly used in TIG (argon arc welding) and some forms of gas shielded arc welding. The following are the applications of tungsten wire in arc welding:

TIG welding (Tig welding): TIG welding is a high-quality arc welding method commonly used to weld stainless steel, aluminum, nickel alloys and other materials. In TIG welding, a tungsten electrode (usually pure tungsten or a tungsten alloy) is used to create a high-temperature arc. The heat generated by the arc is used to melt the wire and workpiece, creating a weld. Tungsten electrode is very suitable for TIG welding due to its high melting point and stable arc performance. It can withstand high temperatures and maintain arc stability.

Gas shielded arc welding: In some gas shielded arc welding, especially in stainless steel and aluminum alloy welding, tungsten electrodes are also used. In these applications, tungsten electrodes are used to generate the arc and need to be paired with an appropriate protective gas, such as argon, to prevent oxygen and nitrogen from contaminating the molten pool.

Arc Cutting and Arc Welding: Tungsten electrodes are also used in arc cutting and arc welding processes. In these processes, the high temperatures generated by the arc are used to cut or weld metal workpieces. Tungsten electrodes provide the required high temperature arc and remain stable at high temperatures.
