What Is a Barium-Tungsten Cathode?

The barium-tungsten (Ba-W) cathode is a hot cathode with excellent performance. It utilizes the porous characteristics of the tungsten matrix to store active substances in the tungsten sponge. Under working conditions, the salt reacts with the tungsten matrix, and the reduced free barium diffuses along the pores to the cathode surface to form a stable emission.

The application of barium-tungsten cathodes is very extensive, mainly in modern microwave vacuum electronic devices, such as cyclotrons, high-current linear induction accelerators, klystrons, etc., to provide a steady supply of electrons for these devices. In addition, barium-tungsten cathodes are also used in electrochemical analysis and solution electrolysis, such as for measuring the chemical redox potential in water, conducting experiments such as solution electrolysis and electrodeposition, and electrochemical analysis of samples such as heavy metal ions, halogen elements and drugs.

In some specially designed barium-tungsten cathodes, such as barium-tungsten cathodes with special structures and high current density, a double-layer substrate is used. The upper layer is made of tungsten powder with specific shapes and specific particles as the substrate material, and the lower layer is made of a mixture of tungsten powder and rhenium powder as the substrate material. It can stably provide a current density of 100A/cm2.

When using a barium-tungsten cathode, it is necessary to clean its surface to avoid contamination or oxidation to ensure its performance and stability.
