What Is the Decomposition Temperature of Tungsten Disulfide?

The decomposition temperature of tungsten disulfide (WS₂) is the point at which it breaks down into its constituent elements or other compounds, rather than melting. In an inert atmosphere (e.g., argon or nitrogen), WS₂ decomposes at approximately 1250-1300°C, yielding tungsten metal and sulfur vapor: WS₂ → W + S₂ (g). This temperature is not a melting point but a thermal limit where the covalent W-S bonds within the layered structure are overcome, and sulfur volatilizes, leaving solid tungsten behind.

In air, however, WS₂’s behavior changes due to oxidation, which occurs at a much lower temperature—around 510°C. Here, WS₂ reacts with oxygen to form tungsten trioxide (WO₃) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂): WS₂ + 7/2 O₂ → WO₃ + 2 SO₂. This oxidation is technically a decomposition process as well, though it involves a chemical reaction with the environment rather than a simple thermal breakdown. The 510°C threshold in air is thus a practical decomposition limit for applications exposed to oxygen, while the 1250-1300°C range applies in vacuum or inert conditions.

The decomposition temperature depends on the atmosphere because WS₂’s layered structure—strong intralayer W-S bonds and weak interlayer van der Waals forces—reacts differently to thermal energy. In inert settings, the energy required to break W-S bonds and vaporize sulfur dictates the higher decomposition point. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show no mass loss in inert conditions until around 1200°C, with rapid decomposition following as sulfur escapes as a gas. In contrast, TGA in air reveals mass changes starting at 400-450°C, accelerating past 510°C as oxidation progresses.

Compared to molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), which decomposes around 1185°C in inert conditions and oxidizes at 350-400°C in air, WS₂ exhibits greater thermal stability, likely due to the stronger W-S bonds (tungsten’s higher electronegativity and atomic mass). This makes WS₂ preferable for high-temperature applications in controlled environments, such as vacuum-sealed bearings or space technology. However, in oxidative settings, its utility is limited by the lower oxidation threshold, requiring protective measures like coatings or inert gas shielding.

The decomposition temperature is critical for WS₂’s use as a solid lubricant or catalyst, as exceeding it alters its structure and properties. For instance, decomposition in inert conditions destroys its lubricity by removing sulfur, while oxidation in air replaces it with WO₃, a non-lubricating oxide. Thus, understanding this property guides its application limits and processing conditions.
