The thermal decomposition method uses ammonium paratungstate (APT) as the raw material and directly prepares ammonium metatungstate (AMT) through high-temperature treatment. The process flow is as follows:
- Heating and Decomposition: Place APT in an environment with a temperature range of 200-300°C to partially decompose it, releasing ammonia gas (NH₃) and water vapor.
- Solution Treatment: Dissolve the decomposition product in water and adjust the pH to generate AMT.
- Crystallization and Separation: Concentrate the solution, cool it to induce crystallization, and then dry to obtain the product.

This method is simple, but it is difficult to control. If the temperature is too high, WO₃ may be directly produced, which reduces the yield. Therefore, the thermal decomposition method is mostly used for laboratory research or small-scale production, with limited industrial applications.
