Ammonium metatungstate (AMT) can be thermally decomposed to directly produce high-purity tungsten trioxide (WO₃). The process is as follows:
- AMT is heated to 300–500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere, decomposing into WO₃, ammonia (NH₃), and water vapor (H₂O).
- The resulting WO₃ is collected and further annealed if needed to enhance crystallinity.
WO₃ is a key component in electrochromic materials (e.g., smart windows) and gas sensors (e.g., NO₂ detection). AMT’s advantage lies in the high purity of its decomposition products with minimal impurities, meeting the demands of the electronics industry. In contrast, producing WO₃ from ammonium paratungstate (APT) requires higher temperatures (700–800°C) and may involve additional steps.
