What Is the Manufacturing Process of Forged Molybdenum Crucible?

Forging is suitable for high-precision, high-strength crucibles, commonly used in semiconductor and precious metal smelting.

Raw material preparation

Select molybdenum billet: Use high-purity molybdenum rods or molybdenum plates (purity ≥ 99.95%), which are made by powder metallurgy sintering and forging/rolling, and the density is close to the theoretical value.

Quality control: Check the chemical composition, density and internal defects (such as cracks and inclusions) of the blank.

Pretreatment of blanks

Cutting: Cut molybdenum rods or plates into sizes suitable for processing.

Heating: Preheat the blank in an inert atmosphere or vacuum furnace at 1200-1500°C to increase ductility and reduce work hardening.

Forging or machining

shaped into the shape of a crucible through forging, extrusion or rotary forging.

Finishing: Use CNC lathes, milling machines or grinders to precisely process the inner and outer surfaces, wall thickness and bottom of the crucible to ensure high dimensional accuracy.

Process environment: Oxidation should be avoided during processing and it should be carried out under inert atmosphere if necessary.

Heat treatment (annealing)

Annealing at 800-1200°C in vacuum or hydrogen atmosphere for 1-2 hours can eliminate processing stress, improve crystal structure and enhance toughness.

Cool slowly to avoid thermal stress.

Surface treatment

Polishing: Mechanically or chemically polish the inner surface to improve finish and corrosion resistance.

Coating (optional): Apply an anti-oxidation coating (such as ZrO ₂) to extend high temperature life.

Cleaning: Use pickling or ultrasonic cleaning to remove impurities such as oil, oxides, etc.

Quality Inspection

Dimensions and Appearance: Check the crucible dimensions, surface finish and geometry.

Performance tests: Density (~10.2 g/cm³), hardness, microstructure and impurity content.

Nondestructive testing: Use ultrasound or X-rays to check for internal defects.

High temperature simulation (optional): Verify the mechanical and chemical stability of the crucible at high temperatures.

Packaging and storage

Same as sintered crucible, in anti-oxidation packaging, stored in a dry environment.
