Why Is Inert Gas Used in Gas Shielded Welding?

The inert gas is selected in gas shielded welding, mainly to protect the welding area from the influence of active gases in the atmosphere (such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen), so as to ensure the welding quality. Specific reasons include:

Prevents oxidation and combustion

Oxygen in the air reacts with high-temperature pool metal, producing oxides that lead to embrittlement, porosity, and inclusions in the weld, reducing weld strength. Inert gases such as argon and helium will not react with metals, effectively isolating oxygen and protecting the melt pool.

Avoid nitriding and hydrogenation

Nitrogen and hydrogen can cause embrittlement, porosity, and cracking of welded metals. The inert gas does not contain active ingredients, which can prevent nitrogen and hydrogen from entering the weld metal and keep the weld pure.

Stabilizing the arc

The inert gas has good ionization characteristics, can stabilize the arc, ensure the smooth welding process, and improve the quality of the weld.

Improved weld appearance

Inert gas protection reduces weld spatter and surface defects, and the welds are smooth and beautiful.
