Do Tungsten Electrodes Get Consumed?

Tungsten electrodes are non-melting electrodes in argon arc welding and are not consumed under normal circumstances. The melting point of tungsten is extremely high (about 3410°C), which is much higher than the arc temperature, so that the tungsten electrode can maintain its shape and stability in the high-temperature arc and will not be ablated and melted into the weld like a melting electrode.

However, tungsten electrodes can also be consumed or damaged under certain abnormal conditions, such as:

Electrode overheating: Excessive current or prolonged welding can lead to high electrode temperature, which may cause electrode burnout or deformation.

Electrode Contamination: Contact with weld slag, oxides, or other impurities can lead to abnormal electrode surfaces, affecting arc stability, and even partial melting of the electrode.

Incorrect sharpening angle or arcing method: Incorrect operation can also exacerbate electrode consumption.

Excessive oxidation of electrodes: Insufficient shielding gas or improper flow rate, leading to accelerated oxidation of electrodes.
