Can Tungsten Electrodes Be Used for AC Welding?

Tungsten electrodes can be used for AC welding, and in AC argon arc welding, tungsten electrodes are widely used, especially when welding light metals such as aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys.

In AC welding, the current periodically switches between the positive and negative poles. When a tungsten electrode works under alternating current, its end undergoes a certain spheroidization process, that is, the tip of the electrode partially forms a spherical shape due to high temperature, which helps stabilize the arc and improve the weld quality.

For AC welding, specific types of tungsten electrodes are commonly used, such as:

Pure tungsten electrode (green marking): suitable for AC welding, especially aluminum and magnesium alloy welding, the electrode head is easy to form an ideal spherical shape, and the arc is stable.

Zirconium tungsten electrode (white mark): also suitable for AC welding, with good arc start and stable performance, and good spheroidization effect.

In contrast, some radioactive elements (such as thorium tungsten electrodes) are more suitable for DC welding and do not perform well when welding AC.
