What Is a Pure Tungsten Electrode?

Pure tungsten electrode (green marking) is an argon arc welding electrode made of high-purity tungsten (metal element W). It contains no or little to no other alloying elements, hence the name “pure tungsten”.

Key features of pure tungsten electrodes include:

Suitable for AC welding (AC)

Pure tungsten electrodes perform well at AC currents, making them particularly suitable for welding light metal alloys such as aluminum and magnesium. AC current can naturally spherical the electrode tip, forming a stable arc that helps protect the quality of the weld.

High melting point and good thermal stability

The melting point of tungsten is extremely high (about 3410°C), which allows the pure tungsten electrode to withstand the high temperature of the welding arc without melting, ensuring the continuous stability of the welding process.

The arc stability is average

Compared with alloy tungsten electrodes (such as thorium tungsten and cerium tungsten), the arc initiation performance and arc stability of pure tungsten electrodes are slightly inferior, and they are prone to ignition difficulties and arc instability.

Environmental protection and safety

Pure tungsten electrodes do not contain radioactive elements, such as thorium, making them safer and more environmentally friendly.
