Can Tungsten Electrodes Be Used Repeatedly?

Tungsten electrodes are non-melting electrodes in argon arc welding and can theoretically be used many times, but the actual service life depends on a variety of factors.

First, the end shape of the tungsten electrode is crucial for arc stability. After each welding, the end may be deformed or passivated due to high-temperature ablation, resulting in arc initiation difficulties or arc instability. Therefore, it is often necessary to resharpen the tip to restore its proper sharpness and shape before continuing to use it.

Secondly, if the electrode surface is contaminated (such as oxide, welding spatter) or ablation, it will affect the arc performance and welding quality, and the electrode should be replaced in severe cases.

In addition, tungsten electrodes are made of different materials and doped elements, and the degree of wear resistance and service life are also different. For example, thorium tungsten and lanthanum tungsten electrodes typically last longer than pure tungsten electrodes due to their better ablation resistance.
