Does the Purity of Argon Affect Tungsten Electrode Lifetime?

The purity of argon gas has a significant impact on the lifetime of tungsten electrodes.

High-purity argon gas (generally required to be above 99.99%) can effectively isolate oxygen and moisture in the air, preventing oxidation and ablation of the tungsten electrode head. The pure protective gas environment helps maintain the stability of the electrode surface and reduces defects caused by thermal oxidation on the electrode surface, thereby extending the service life of the tungsten electrode.

On the contrary, if the purity of argon is low and contains more oxygen, water vapor or other impurities, it is easy to lead to intensified oxidation of the electrode head, accelerated ablation rate, and the formation of a fragile oxide layer on the surface of the electrode, increasing the risk of arc instability and difficulty in arcing, and shortening the life of the electrode.

Therefore, ensuring the high purity of argon gas is one of the key conditions for improving the efficiency of tungsten electrode use and welding quality.
