In TIG welding, the distance between the tungsten electrode and the weldment is generally called “electrode gap” or “electrode distance”, and its reasonable control is crucial for welding quality and arc stability. It is generally recommended to maintain the following ranges:
Distance range: generally kept between 1.5 and 3 mm.
Specific value: Commonly used about 2 mm is the best, which can not only ensure the stability of the arc, but also avoid the electrode from touching the workpiece.
Too close distance can easily cause the tungsten electrode to stick to the weldment, produce arc instability, and even burn out the electrode; If the distance is too far, the arc is easy to spread, heat dispersion, and affect the formation and penetration of the weld.
In actual operation, the electrode distance should be appropriately adjusted according to the welding current, workpiece material, weldment shape and welding position. At the same time, maintaining stable operation and avoiding electrode shaking and excessive contact is an important part of ensuring the welding effect.
