Contact arcing is easy to contaminate the tungsten electrode.
When contacting the arc, the tungsten electrode needs to directly contact the weldment and then quickly pull it away to form an arc. During this process, the electrode tip may adhere to metals or oxides on the surface of the workpiece, leading to contamination of the electrode surface. Contaminated tungsten electrodes will affect the stability of the arc, increase the difficulty of arcing, and may also cause “tungsten inclusion” defects and reduce the welding quality.
In addition, contact arcing may cause local overheating or ablation of the electrode tip, deforming the electrode tip and further affecting the service life.
Therefore, although contact arcing equipment is simple and low-cost, high-frequency arcing or boost arcing is more ideal from the perspective of welding quality and electrode protection. If contact arcing must be used, it is recommended to keep the electrode as clean as possible during operation, avoid repeated adhesion, and regularly check and regrind the electrode head.
