What Is a Barium Tungsten Cathode?

Barium tungsten cathode, also known as tungsten-barium alloy electrode, is an electrode made of two metal alloy materials, tungsten and barium. The preparation of this electrode is to change the problem of low electron emission ability of pure tungsten cathode, thereby increasing electron generation and electron current density, improving the ignition speed of gas discharge lamps, and reducing the operating temperature of the electrode.

Barium tungsten cathode has a series of excellent electrochemical properties, such as high stability and low capacitance, which makes it sensitive to the redox response of many organic and inorganic substances, can work under a wide range of pH conditions, and exhibits high corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Therefore, it is widely used in the electrochemical analysis of samples such as halogen elements, heavy metal ions and drugs in aqueous solution, and is also used to measure the chemical redox potential in water bodies, as well as experiments such as solution electrolysis and electrodeposition.

In addition, barium tungsten cathode is also an electrode material for high-intensity gas discharge lamps such as xenon flash lamps. Xenon flash lamps are filled with high-pressure inert gas (xenon) in quartz lamp tubes, and use positive and negative electrical stimulation of xenon to react with rare metals to produce light. The use of barium tungsten cathodes can make the flash rate of xenon flash lamps higher, the brightness greater, and can be used normally in an environment lower than the mains voltage.
