Introduction to Tungsten Oxychloride

Deep red needle-like crystals. It can be violently hydrolyzed by water, so it decomposes immediately in moist air. The relative density is 11.92, the melting point is 211°C, and the boiling point is 227.5°C. Soluble in benzene, disulfide dichloride and carbon disulfide, insoluble in ethanol. It decomposes in water, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid to form a yellow-green precipitate, and reacts with ammonia water or sodium hydroxide solution to form a tungstate solution. It is prepared by reacting tungsten trioxide and tungsten hexachloride (molar ratio 1:2) at 175-200°C. The use of tungsten oxychloride is commonly used in the manufacture of incandescent lamps.
