Tungsten disulfide (WS₂) exhibits excellent thermal stability, making it a preferred material for high-temperature applications, such as solid lubricants in aerospace and industrial machinery. Its thermal stability refers to its ability to maintain structural integrity and functional properties across a wide temperature range. WS₂ remains stable in air up to approximately 510°C, beyond which it begins to oxidize, forming tungsten trioxide (WO₃) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). In inert atmospheres (e.g., argon or nitrogen), its stability extends to much higher temperatures, around 1200-1300°C, where it eventually decomposes rather than melts.
The layered hexagonal structure of WS₂, with weak van der Waals forces between layers and strong covalent W-S bonds within layers, underpins its thermal resilience. These bonds resist thermal agitation, preventing structural breakdown at moderate temperatures. In oxidative environments, the limiting factor is the reaction with oxygen: WS₂ + 7/2 O₂ → WO₃ + 2 SO₂. This oxidation process is slow below 400°C but accelerates above 510°C, marking the practical upper limit in air. In vacuum or inert conditions, WS₂’s stability is enhanced because oxidation is precluded, allowing it to withstand temperatures approaching its decomposition point.
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) studies confirm that WS₂’s mass remains constant in inert atmospheres up to 1200°C, with decomposition into tungsten and sulfur vapors occurring beyond this threshold. This high thermal stability in non-oxidizing conditions is a key advantage over organic lubricants, which degrade at much lower temperatures (e.g., 200-300°C). Compared to MoS₂, which oxidizes in air around 350-400°C, WS₂ offers superior resistance to thermal degradation, making it suitable for extreme environments like engine components or spacecraft bearings.
The thermal stability also supports WS₂’s use in thin films and coatings, where it retains its low-friction properties under heat generated by mechanical stress. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures in air can compromise its performance due to oxide formation, which lacks the lubricity of WS₂. Thus, its thermal stability is context-dependent: exceptional in inert or vacuum settings, but limited by oxidation in air.
