What Is the Melting Point of Tungsten Disulfide?

Tungsten disulfide (WS₂) does not have a well-defined melting point in the traditional sense because it decomposes before reaching a liquid phase under standard conditions. As a layered transition metal dichalcogenide, WS₂’s thermal behavior is governed by its chemical and structural properties rather than a simple solid-to-liquid transition. In an inert atmosphere (e.g., argon or nitrogen), WS₂ remains stable up to approximately 1250-1300°C, at which point it decomposes into tungsten metal and sulfur vapor rather than melting: WS₂ → W + S₂ (g).

This decomposition temperature is often mistaken as a melting point in casual references, but melting implies a reversible phase change to a liquid state, which WS₂ does not exhibit. The strong covalent W-S bonds within each layer and the weaker van der Waals forces between layers mean that heating disrupts the lattice by vaporizing sulfur, leaving solid tungsten behind. In air, WS₂ oxidizes well before this point (around 510°C), forming WO₃ and SO₂, further complicating any notion of melting.

The absence of a melting point aligns with other TMDs like MoS₂, which also decomposes (around 1185°C in inert conditions) rather than melts. This behavior contrasts with elemental tungsten, which has an extremely high melting point of 3422°C, highlighting how sulfur’s presence lowers the thermal threshold by enabling decomposition. Experimental evidence, such as differential thermal analysis (DTA), shows no endothermic peak indicative of melting, only exothermic oxidation or decomposition events depending on the atmosphere.

For practical purposes, WS₂’s “melting point” is irrelevant, as its applications (e.g., lubricants, coatings) rely on its solid-state properties at temperatures far below decomposition. Its inability to melt limits its use in processes requiring molten phases but enhances its value in high-temperature solid-state applications where stability is key.
