The stability of ammonium metatungstate is highly dependent on the pH of the solution. At low pH (below 2), the compound can decompose to form tungstic acid, especially when heated. At high pH (above 10), the compound can undergo hydrolysis to form polytungstate ions. Therefore, the compound is most stable in neutral to slightly acidic solutions.
