Argon arc welding tungsten electrodes can be classified into various types based on their composition and doping elements. Different types of tungsten electrodes have their own characteristics in terms of welding performance, suitable materials, and usage environments. Common classifications mainly include the following:
Pure tungsten electrode
Pure tungsten electrodes are made of high-purity tungsten and are usually green in color. It is mainly used for AC welding and is especially suitable for welding light alloys such as aluminum and magnesium. The pure tungsten electrode is easy to form a stable spherical arc, which is suitable for occasions with high requirements for the appearance of the weld, but its arcing performance and ablation resistance are relatively weak.
Thorium tungsten electrode
Thorium tungsten electrodes are added with 1% to 2% thorium oxide and are red in color. It has excellent arc initiation performance and arc stability, suitable for DC welding, and is widely used in the welding of stainless steel, carbon steel and other materials. Thorium tungsten electrodes have a long service life, but thorium has a certain degree of radioactivity, environmental protection is limited, and is gradually replaced by other electrodes.
Cerium tungsten electrode
The cerium tungsten electrode is doped with cerium oxide and is gray in color. Its arc initiation is sensitive, suitable for low current and precision welding, and is widely used in electronic devices and thin sheet materials. Cerium tungsten electrodes are corrosion-resistant and have stable performance, making them one of the environmentally friendly alternatives to thorium tungsten electrodes.
Lanthanum tungsten electrode
Lanthanum tungsten electrodes contain lanthanum oxide, which is usually black or gold in color. It has both DC and AC welding capabilities, making it suitable for both automatic and robotic welding. Lanthanum tungsten electrode has good arcing performance and long service life, making it suitable for welding a variety of materials.
Zirconium tungsten electrode
Zirconium tungsten electrodes are doped with zirconia and are white in color. It is mainly used for AC welding, especially suitable for welding aluminum alloys. Its end spheroidization performance is good, can stabilize AC arc, and is suitable for high-current welding.
Rare earth tungsten electrode
Rare earth tungsten electrodes are doped with a variety of rare earth elements, and the color is mostly purple. It combines the advantages of multiple elements, has excellent arc initiation performance and arc stability, is suitable for high-end welding equipment and complex working conditions, and has gradually become the choice of advanced welding technology.
