What Type of Power Supply Should Be Used for TIG Welding?

TIG welding typically employs both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) power sources, depending on the welding material and process requirements.

1.DC Power Supply (dc)

It is mainly used for welding materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, copper and its alloys.

DC current can be DC negative (DCEN, electrode to negative) or DC positive (DCEP, electrode to positive), of which DCEN is the most widely used because the electrode is less heated, the electrode life is longer, and the arc is stable.

DC power supplies provide stable arcing and good penetration depth control, making them suitable for most metal welding.

2.AC Power (ac)

It is mainly used for welding aluminum, magnesium and its alloys and other materials.

AC current periodically switches polarity, which helps keep the electrode clean (oxide layer removed) and provides better pool control on the other.

AC power makes the arc stable and suitable for metals that are sensitive to surface oxide films.
