Recently, the research group of Wu Zhengyan, researcher of the Institute of Intelligence, Hefei Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Cai Dongqing of Donghua University have made important progress in the photocatalytic treatment of water pollution. This work provides an efficient solution to the pollution of antibiotics in the water environment. Related results were accepted and published by Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, an authoritative journal in the field of environmental catalysis.
In recent years, the extensive use of antibiotics has led to the flooding of water bodies and caused the proliferation of a large number of drug-resistant microorganisms, which has led to the intensification of antibiotics and microbial pollution in water bodies. In response to such pollution, the research group designed and developed a highly efficient cadmium telluride/bismuth tungstate composite material as a photocatalyst for pollution control. The catalyst utilizes the synergistic effect of cadmium telluride and bismuth tungstate to promote the production of active oxygen in water, thereby efficiently degrading antibiotics and inactivating bacteria.
At the same time, the catalyst shows a good recycling rate, and can maintain a high photocatalytic efficiency after multiple catalysis, and directly uses sunlight as the driving force of photocatalysis, which meets the needs of sustainable development of a green environment. Therefore, the catalyst shows a certain application prospect in the treatment of antibiotic pollution in water. The research work was funded and supported by the National Key R&D Program Project, the STS Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Ningxia Key R&D Project.
Bismuth tungstate is one of the simplest compounds among Aurivillius structural materials. It is a visible light semiconductor with excellent properties such as piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, and good light-harvesting ability. It is also non-toxic and stable. It has a wide range of applications in the fields of hydrogen and oxygen production from aquatic products or photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Cadmium telluride is an important II-VI compound semiconductor material, which has certain liver and kidney toxicity, and is generally used in the field of photocatalysts or solar cells.
