The Difference between The Crystal Structure of Tungsten Tetrabromide and Tungsten Tetrachloride

The crystal structure of tungsten tetrabromide (WBr4) is closely related to its molecular structure. In the crystal structure, the tungsten atom is at the center and the four bromine atoms are at the vertices, forming a tetrahedral structure. This tetrahedral structure is arranged in different ways in the crystal, forming a variety of tungsten tetrabromide crystal structures with different properties. For example, α-WBr4 and β-WBr4 have different space groups and lattice constants, and exhibit different physical and chemical properties.

In contrast, the crystal structure of tungsten tetrachloride (WCl4) is relatively simple. In the crystal structure, the tungsten atom is at the center and the four chlorine atoms are at the vertices, also forming a tetrahedral structure. However, unlike tungsten tetrabromide, the tetrahedral structure of tungsten tetrachloride is arranged in a single way in the crystal, forming a single crystal with a cubic structure. This single arrangement makes the properties of tungsten tetrachloride relatively uniform, with stable physical and chemical properties.

It is worth noting that the crystal structure of tungsten tetrabromide and tungsten tetrachloride is also affected by environmental factors such as temperature and pressure. Under different temperature and pressure conditions, their crystal structures may undergo transformations and exhibit different properties. Therefore, understanding these influencing factors is of great significance for accurately understanding and predicting their properties and functions.
