What Is Carbide Drilling?

Carbide drilling is a method in which cemented carbide blocks of different geometric shapes and certain sizes are embedded in the drill bit body according to certain requirements, and the rock is broken and drilled according to certain drilling procedures. Carbide drilling is generally suitable for rocks with drillability of grades 1 to 6 and some grades 7 to 8. The drilling diameter is from 35.5mm to 2000mm, and the commonly used drill bit diameters are 75, 91, 110, 130, 150mm and other specifications. Carbide drilling can drill holes at any angle.

The advantages of cemented carbide drilling are: high drilling efficiency in soft rock and medium-hard rock, good drilling quality, low consumption of drilling materials, low cost, easy drilling operation, flexible drilling method, and wide application range. Generally speaking, the main factors that affect the efficiency of cemented carbide drilling are: the nature of the rock, the quality of the cemented carbide drill bit, the operating technology and drilling procedures during drilling, etc.

Carbide block is a very hard and high-strength alloy material. It was originally used in metal cutting tools and began to be used in mining and oil drilling and geological exploration drilling operations in the early 20th century. At present, cemented carbide has been widely used in oil drilling and geological exploration drilling in my country and other countries around the world. Carbide plays an important role in core drilling. About 60% of my country’s annual drilling workload is completed using the cemented carbide drilling method; it accounts for about 80% of coal field geological exploration.
