What Are Manufacturing Processes of Cemented Carbide?

The manufacturing process of cemented carbide mainly includes the following steps:

Mix preparation

The component powders of cemented carbide are mixed according to a certain proportion, and an appropriate amount of bonding metal, such as cobalt, nickel, copper, etc., is added to increase the adhesion and plasticity of the mixture.

Forming

The mixture is formed into compacts of the desired shape and size. Common forming methods include compression molding, hot pressing and isostatic pressing. Press molding is a process in which the mixture is put into a mold and compressed under a certain pressure and temperature. Hot pressing is a process in which the mixture is placed into a graphite mold and formed under high temperature and high pressure at the sintering temperature. Isostatic pressing is a forming method that uses liquid media to press powder into the desired shape and density under isostatic pressure.

sintering

The formed compact is sintered at high temperature in a vacuum furnace to bring the bonding metal into a liquid phase, thereby forming a cemented carbide with the required strength and hardness. During the sintering process, attention needs to be paid to the control of temperature, time and atmosphere to ensure sintering quality.

heat treatment

If the hardness and strength of cemented carbide need to be further improved, heat treatment can be performed. Heat treatment is to maintain the temperature at a certain temperature for a certain period of time and then cool it at a certain speed to improve the mechanical properties of cemented carbide.

In addition to the above process steps, the cemented carbide manufacturing process also requires attention to issues such as the selection of raw materials, preparation of mixtures, design and manufacturing of molds, control of the sintering process, and product testing and inspection. Strict quality control and process control are required throughout the manufacturing process to ensure product quality and reliability.
