What is a Fixed Cutter Bit?

Fixed Cutter Bit is a cutting tool used for drilling. Compared with Tri-cone Bit, it uses a fixed cutting structure instead of rotating blades.

Fixed cutting insert drill bits typically consist of carbide or polycrystalline diamond (PDC) cutting teeth that are fixed directly to the drill’s cutting surface. Unlike a three-rotating conical-blade drill, the cutting teeth of a fixed-cutting-blade drill do not rotate. Instead, they use downward force and the rotational motion of the drill to cut and break rock.

Carbide cutting teeth usually use tungsten carbide material, which has high hardness and wear resistance. Polycrystalline diamond cutting teeth are made of synthetic diamond particles through a high-temperature and high-pressure process. They also have excellent hardness and wear resistance.

Fixed cutting insert drill bits offer several advantages in drilling operations. They are suitable for different types of rock including soft rock, medium hard rock and dense hard rock. These drill bits usually have high cutting efficiency and drilling speed, and are relatively stable and less prone to failure.

Fixed cutting insert drill bits are widely used in oil and gas exploration, underground mining and water well drilling. They can be used in different drilling operations such as vertical drilling, horizontal drilling and directional drilling.
