What Are Performance Requirements of Cemented Carbide for Drilling?

Generally speaking, cemented carbide is required to have the following properties:

(1) Hardness

Generally, the hardness of cemented carbide used for core drilling should be greater than HRA50.

(2) Resilience

Because the drill pipe used for drilling is elastomer, and most of the rocks being drilled are heterogeneous, the load at the bottom of the hole changes greatly during drilling.

Therefore, the bending strength of the alloy is required to be greater than 1150MPa.

(3) The material should be shaped so that it can be easily welded on the drill bit.

(4) There should be certain thermal hardness and thermal conductivity to reduce alloy wear and extend the life of the drill bit.

When drilling, the grade and type of cemented carbide should be reasonably selected based on the rock properties and usage conditions.
