What Is Manufacturing Process of Cemented Carbide?

The manufacturing process of cemented carbide can be divided into the following main steps:

  1. Raw material preparation: including selecting appropriate raw materials, such as carbides, bonded metals, etc., and performing necessary processing, such as grinding, drying, etc., for subsequent use.
  2. Mixture preparation: Add the bonding metal to the carbide in the form of fine powder, add other components if necessary, and mix evenly to make a homogeneous mixture.
  3. Forming: Put the mixture into a mold and apply pressure or temperature to deform it into a compact with a predetermined shape and size. The forming method can be cold pressing, hot pressing or isostatic confinement.
  4. Sintering: The compact is sintered at high temperature, so that the linear shortening rate of the compact reaches about 18% and the volume shortening is about 50%. During sintering, the density of each part of the compact is uniform, thereby obtaining the required cemented carbide.
  5. Post-processing: The sintered cemented carbide may need some necessary processing, such as grinding, polishing, stress relief, etc., to make it meet the requirements of the final product.

Specific carbide manufacturing methods and processes may vary based on different varieties and uses.
